Hewn Log

What is a Hewn Log Cabin?

Hewn Log cabins are build with hewn logs. Hewn log construction is exactly how it sounds. It is the use of full logs typically hewn, or cut down two of the sides, that are stacked on top one another to build structures with. This building method was extremely popular with the early American pioneer settlers. It is a very effective and beautiful building format. As Hewn Log Cabin Builders we offer a variety of services regarding them including:

  • Hewn Log Cabin Building and Construction
  • Hewn Log Cabin Chinking

Why a Hewn Log instead of a Round Log Cabin?

Round log cabins are a simpler version of cabin which we are definitely fans of. Sometimes the simpler something is the more elegant and beautiful. The problem with round log cabins comes from a special analysis of log anatomy and species. Trees, and therefore logs, have what is known as sapwood (outer wood toward the bark) and heartwood (toward the middle). Many logs used in cabin building have a sapwood that is susceptible to rot. When you keep a log round you are essentially keep that layer of sapwood on that faces the elements and moisture. This will inevitably cause this sapwood to rot unless consistently treated with preservatives. At this point we begin to see that round log construction, in the long run, isn’t so simple as it requires much greater maintenance.

Like any other building method, timber framing tools are many yet can be boiled down to a few core tools. Modern advances in sawing technology have changed how things are done, but the process remains consistent. The tools of Timber Frame Contractors include:

  • Hammer
  •  Chainsaw or tenon saw
  • Crosscut saw
  • Timber Frame Chisels (different sizes)
  • Timber Framer Slick
  • Drill with various wood bit sizes
  • Level
